D.J. Montague Third Graders See Special Virginia Air and Space Center Programs
The Virginia Air and Space Center recently presented two science programs to third graders at D.J. Montague. “Mad Scientist” and “Living Planet” were made possible by a DJM PTA mini grant which the third grade team applied for.
During the “Mad Scientist” demonstration, students used the scientific method to perform real experiments. Students had to determine the state of matter of unknown substances, and measure weight, volume, temperature and dimensions. Student James Tisk said, “We learned about science, like weight and measurement and some of the tools to use.” Another student, Jonathan Farley, said, “We got to put our hands in A then B. Cold was A, and we had to guess what B was.”
During the “Living Planet” demonstration, students participated in games, explored habitats and discovered how animals’ behavioral and physical adaptations help them survive their environment. Using a terrarium, students studied a closed environment and observed the water cycle in action. Pre- and post-visit activities based on VA SOLs are provided to extend learning for the students.
