Fifth Graders Serve On Safety Patrol to Demonstrate Leadership
A unit on leadership at the beginning of fifth grade emphasizes that “leaders communicate beliefs and values through action.” A new avenue for leadership is the James River Elementary safety patrol that serves the school at arrival and dismissal times. All students who are not involved in the JRE News crew or on the Student Council Association were invited to submit an application on why they wanted to serve on the safety patrol. Students were interviewed by Principal Dr. Stacia Barreau and International Baccalaureate Coordinator, Janet Parker. Ten members were selected who now perform morning and afternoon duties to serve as role models and reminders to all students K-5 that James River is a safe place.
