To All WJCC Staff, Families and Community Members:
Because each of us values education, we have an opportunity to create a unique and bold vision for our students that will be a conduit to a remarkable public education in Williamsburg-James City County. We are about to embark on the creation of a visionary and forward-thinking strategic plan: a plan which must reflect the desires of the board and all stakeholders and one which allows us to reconceptualize what a student experiences in our schools. We invite you to participate and invest in our future.
Our community is unique, unlike any that surrounds it. Therefore, the process we use to achieve our dreams also must be unique. We have one opportunity to create a bold pathway that will be, as one citizen put it to me, “a game changer for education in this community.” I commend the board for recognizing the value of a multi-year, multi-faceted plan which during its creation and implementation will be dynamic, and will support the important organizational concepts of continuous evaluation and continuous improvement.
The process of the development of this plan must be open and devoid of biases that exist both within the school system and its community. We understand that when our constituents have the opportunity to deliver information to an outsider, they will do so differently than if delivering that information to a member of the school division. An open, honest, free-flowing dialog about what we can achieve will be a catapult to championing future growth, change, and success.
We have set our sights high. To reach our goals, we will rely on expertise to help shape the future of our school system so that all of us: the Board, leaders, teachers, students, families and community members, can have an equal voice in what education will look like -- must look like -- in the years to come. With a thorough and professionally-managed process, we will ensure that the future of our school system means success for every student and that our legacy is one of systems-based continuous improvement where the education of every child is valued by everyone. But, building the plan is only the initial step. We must ensure that the vision and plan we create garners the collective support of our entire educational community, because it will take each and every one of us to move it forward.
I hope you will join us to help it happen.
Sincerely,
Steven M. Constantino, Ed.D.
Superintendent
